The Hint

If you want me to lose my temper, and lose it really fast, all you have to do is hint that lots of people disapprove of my shameful behavior.

I remember a published author telling me that no reputable scientist believed in any of the alternative explanations for the cause of a prominent disease. I mentioned a prize-winning scientist. “He’s not reputable!” he responded. He had a closed system: any scientist that disagreed with him was not reputable, no matter how many prizes he had won.

And when the closed system of logic springs a leak, the last defense is a well placed hint.

So when you disagree with a hardline church, and they can’t defend their position, they will resort to the Hint or the Sneer. If you are aware of what they are doing, it will be then that you know you have stumped them. They do not have an answer to your challenge.

About Mark

I was raised in the conservative non-institutional churches of Christ and attended Florida College in Tampa, Florida. I served as a minister for 8 years in the non-institutional churches of Christ, and 4 years at a mainline church of Christ in Vermont.

One Response to The Hint

  1. Mary Ann says:

We as imperfect humans have missed the mark again in our misguided efforts to “do the will of God.” If we were satisfied to follow His Word, we would not feel the need to have a name that differentiates us from others. Nowhere in the scriptures can the name The Church of Christ” used. Instead, it reads “the churches of Christ salute you.” There are a number of names for the different groups who had been called out of the world into the kingdom of God. When we truly learn to speak where the Bible speaks and BE SILENT where it is silent, we can begin to listen to the guidance of His Spirit who indwells those who are in Christ. May He forgive our sinfulness in accord with the promises regarding the cleansing blood. He knows His own, and does not need our church directories to tell Him who is being continually cleansed. Faith. Grace, Love.
